The Shadow Lines (1988) is a Sahitya Akademi Award-winning novel by Indian writer Amitav Ghosh. Revolving around the theme of nationalism in an increasingly globalized world, Ghosh's The Shadow Lines questions the real meaning of political freedom and the borders which virtually seem to both establish and separate.This book captures the perspectival view of time and events. "The Shadow Lines" draws a line that bring people together and hold them apart.

Amitav Ghosh's "The Shadow Lines" Short Summary :

It is a story of a middle class Indian family based in Calcutta. The narrator, the unnamed boy, adores his uncle Tridib because of his tremendous knowledge and his perspective of the incidents and places.The narrator is sexually attracted to his cousin Ila but his feelings are passive.Tha'mma has a dreadful past and wants to reunite her family and goes to Dhaka to bring back her uncle. Tridib loves May and sacrificed his life to rescue her from mobs in the communal riots of 1963 in Dhaka.
    Tridib’s death and May’s guilt. Ila's love for Nick. Tridib, May and the narrator standing at the the opposite ends of perception defined by Ila and Nick moves the story.
